How to Clean Invisalign
Invisalign is the most popular choice for teens and adults wanting to straighten their teeth quickly, effectively, and discreetly. While you get to skip dodging metal wires and brackets when brushing and flossing your teeth, it’s important to clean your removable Invisalign aligners to prevent discoloration and bacterial growth. Otherwise, your teeth may start to appear yellow, or you could develop bad breath. Follow this guide to keep your Invisalign clean.
Cleaning Invisalign
Get in the habit of cleaning your Invisalign every morning after you wake up and every night before going to bed. Do this alongside the rest of your oral care routine, and you’ll put clean aligners back on your freshly brushed and flossed teeth.
What to Use When Cleaning Invisalign Aligners
- Antibacterial soap and water: Apply a small amount of soap to your Invisalign aligners and brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush (different from the one you use to brush your teeth) under running water.
- Invisalign cleaning crystals: Invisalign sells a sterilizing product called Sterialigner, which contains rubbing alcohol and sodium bicarbonate. Your aligners will be ready to go after just a three-minute soak.
- Distilled white vinegar: Soak your aligners for 15 to 20 minutes in a solution of one part vinegar and three parts water.
- Hydrogen peroxide: Soak your aligners for 30 minutes in a solution of equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water.
- Baking soda: Soak your aligners for 30 to 60 minutes in a solution of one tablespoon baking soda and one-half cup water.
What NOT to Use When Cleaning Invisalign Aligners
- Mouthwash: The dyes and chemicals found in most mouthwashes can damage your aligners.
- Scented or dyed soap: A bitter taste or discoloration can occur if you use scented or dyed soaps.
- Bleach: This potent chemical may harm your health if any residue remains when you put your aligners back in your mouth.
Other Tips to Keep Your Invisalign Clean
- Avoid using hot water to clean your aligners.
- Rinse your aligners every time you take them out to prevent plaque and dried saliva from collecting on them.
- Always remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything besides water.
- Store your aligners in a designated, airtight container to protect them from bacteria.
- Brush your teeth after eating and before putting your aligners back in, if possible. Otherwise, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water to help flush food particles out.
